Ladyboys aka kathoeys in Thailand have long been campaigning for the right to change their legal gender title from Mr (Mister) to Ms (Miss), in other words Ladyboys want to be legally classed as a woman, this means they will be able to change the ID (identity) card title to Ms instead of Mr. Is this morally right or wrong, or should morals not come into it
Why Ladyboys should be able to change legal gender identity
Ladyboys, (kathoeys, Transgenders, The Third sex) genuinely feel and believe that they have been born into the wrong body, some are actually repulsed by their male body, especially their penis. Most Ladyboys know from an early age, as early as 6 years old that they should really have been born a woman, they often start hormone treatment at puberty. Some Ladyboys undergo years of treatment which often involves cosmetic surgery, having silicone breast implants, shaving the Adams apple, face lifts and even full sexual re-assignment surgery. After all this hardship and pain of making changes, to rectify what they feel has been a mistake, can they not then rectify the last mistake of their legal gender.
Why Ladyboys should not be allowed to change legal gender ID
Let’s assume Ladyboys have won their campaign to change their legal gender and all the Kathoeys in Thailand have new ID cards with the title Ms instead of Mr, let’s also assume they have full rights as a woman. So you meet a Ladyboy, believing her to be a woman, there are no obvious signs that she is really a Ladyboy and of course she does not tell you. Eventually you get married and you speak to her about having a family, what does she do now, admit that she is a ladyboy or make some excuses that she can’t have children. Either way you have been conned, so should there not always be some means of identifying a persons birth gender ?.
