Thai Kiss is a book which you can truly judge by it’s cover, alluring, mysterious and colorful. I’m a big fan of Stephen Leather and John Burdett, I think books such as Bangkok Tattoo are both gripping and insightful. Those are the kind of books I look out for, and after seeing the cover of Thai Kiss I reckoned this one could be another book in that mould, a gripping story full of fascinating insights to the dark side of Thailand. So now, a few days after first picking up Thai Kiss, I have to confess I’m a big fan of Matt Carrell.
In essence this book is 2 characters and 2 stories merging into one. Paul worked in the UK as a hospital porter and drug dealer until his partner in crime was murdered. He had some difficult decisions to make, and people to avoid. He also had a dream of building his own empire. A dream, a paper chase, and fate led him to Pattaya.
Yim’s own fateful path to Pattaya began on Boxing Day 2004, she had returned home to visit her family in northern Thailand. News slowly filtered through of a devastating wave which killed thousands on the Andaman islands, including the lover she left so she could return to visit her family. Some time later, the tragic murder of Yim’s father brought to an end what was a reasonably comfortable life. Poverty, and the daughter which her lover never set eyes on ignited a quest for money to support her destitute family.
The stark, cruel, unforgiving face of Pattaya hides behind an endearing mask. For Paul and Yim the face behind the mask reveals itself as an ally in their fight for prosperity. What follows is a tale of treachery, vengeance, violence and deceit, which many might say is just another day in Pattaya.
