Avoid Thailand’s Songkran Motorcycle Madness

Updated February 25, 2026 By Darren C

These Thailand Songkran photos (below) are typical modern day Songkran scenes, and you’ll notice they all feature what looks like scenes of people having lots of fun, and more importantly they all feature motorcycles. I wish you a happy and fun filled Songkran, but I would also like to remind you that unless we follow a few commonsense rules of Songkran it can be extremely dangerous, proof of which is reflected by the annual Songkran fatality statistics.

Riding a motorcycle around Thailand is fraught with danger at the best of times, but during the Songkran Festival just about every traffic law and safety rule is broken, or simply not enforced during this relaxed and carefree Thai holiday period.

Relaxed, carefree fun is a good thing, but riding a motorcycle drunk, without a helmet, and having freezing cold water thrown in your face can only be described as extremely dangerous. Enjoy the Songkran Festival, but leave your bike at home, and respect those who are foolhardy enough to celebrate their Songkran on the back of a motorbike by avoiding throwing water in their face.

Four on a bike

Four on a bike, one wrapped around the handlebars, none of them wearing helmets, one perched precariously on the back of the seat whilst holding a bottle of beer and a water gun. On top of that they are running gauntlet of Songkran revelers queuing up to squirt, throw or pour copious amounts of freezing cold water over them. Leave your bike at home this Songkran !!.

Cold shock

Songkran Motorcycle Madness: Shock and awe, a bucket full of freezing cold water is enough of a distraction to turn Songkran fun into Songkran tragedy. Leave you bike at home this Songkran.
