Thai Superstition – Roadside Spirit Houses

Updated March 21, 2018 By Darren C

In Thailand, unwanted or broken Spirit Houses should not simply be thrown away, the favored locations for placing old Spirit Houses are in the grounds of a temple, underneath a sacred fig tree or somewhere with religious significance. The Spirit Houses pictured in the 2 photos below were on a roadside not far from Pattaya Thailand.

At the first glance there does not appear to be any significant reason why these spirit houses have been placed here, but as you can see from the second photo there is some sort of shrine or possibly a large spirit house itself, and just behind it there is a banyan tree. I don’t know why the shrine is there, maybe this spot has religious importance, it could also be here to appease spirits which have died on this particular stretch of road.

There happens to be a rather dangerous bend in the road just meters from this location, it is a rural road which means it is also unlit, adding to the danger for drivers. So the large shrine or spirit house might be here to please the ghosts and stop them being mischievous when a motorist passes.
