What is the Yasothon Thailand Rocket Festival about?
The Yasothon Rocket Festival is the largest and most famous rocket festival in Thailand, but similar festivals are held in towns and villages throughout Northeast Thailand.
The rocket festival, also known as ‘Bun Bang Fai’ takes place at around the same time the rainy season begins. Bun Bang Fai is said to have originated in Laos and is a centuries-old tradition used to make merit and entice the rains.
Activities on the first 2 days of the festival involve dancing, music, and pageantry. Rocket launching usually takes place on the final day. As you will see in the video play-list, these rockets are no toys, they are serious fireworks that can be several meters in length.
The rockets at the Yasothon Rocket Festival are all homemade from Bamboo, PVC pipes, and an assortment of other materials. There is also a certain amount of pride at stake. The rocket festival is not merely a display and ritual, it’s fiercely competitive.
