Washed up Krathongs

Updated May 8, 2025 By Darren C

Loy Krathong is one of the most magical and beautiful annual events in Thailand, but have you ever wondered what becomes of the millions of beautiful Krathongs that are released hopefully into the sea, rivers, and lakes of Thailand?

This (photo below) was taken at Lake Mabprachan in East Pattaya the day after the Loy Krathong Festival. Fortunately, the Krathongs are mainly made of natural or biodegradable materials such as banana trees and flowers.

Still, the morning after Loy Krathong is not such a pretty sight as the night before.
