Most Thai people will go to great lengths to keep the sun off their skin, especially off their face. This Thai woman (pictured in the photo below) seems to have gone to extreme measures to keep the sun from her face. I was going to call this post “The Invisible Mother” because the improvised mask she is wearing resembles the balaclava style masks, complete with sunglasses, worn by many Thai outdoor workers. To me they look like the Invisible Man, I’m sure you will know what I mean if you have ever seen them.
So why do the Thais go to such lengths to keep the sun from their face.
In Thailand there is a thing called “face” which is all about how you look, how you are regarded and perceived by others, I guess we are all conscious of this to some extent but in Thailand it is more exaggerated. So, if you are in the sun you go brown, and brown skin in Thailand is not desirable because this means you must be an outdoor worker, outdoor work is usually manual labor and hence lowly paid. I think it’s called “face value”.
