I can now say, in a little removed, round about way “as seen on t.v”, yours truly, the author of Pattaya Unlimited had his 5 minutes of fame. I can also claim a scoop for Pattaya Unlimited, the first blog or website to screen the Youtube clip of my encounter with a sea turtle which went viral over Christmas and New Year of 2012 – 2013 and then later was selected for screening by Japan’s NHK T.V network, read on and let me explain.
Back in November 2011 I was diving on an oil platform in the Gulf of Thailand, I had an amazing once in a lifetime encounter with a sea turtle which you can read all about and watch right here, (photo above) it was one of those magical moments every diver dreams of, and it was all captured on camera. We don’t have access to Youtube offshore, and I was itching to get the video on Youtube and then post it on Pattaya Unlimited, I had a few days remaining offshore and in those few days every man and his dog also got a copy of the video, you can bet your last dollar someone else was going to stick it on youtube, and sure enough they did, but not before me, and I wasted no time embedding it on Pattaya Unlimited, what a scoop.
It took another year for my turtle video to go viral, although my clip had many hits it was on a friends youtube channel that the video had massive hits over a 2 week period, amassing something like 300,000 views in that short time. Nevertheless, I it still amassed over 70,000 hits on my own channel, and me and the turtle were spotted by Japan’s N.H.K T.V Network, they asked me for permission to feature the video on their program ‘Taloula Dog’. After I granted them permission they then asked if I would be prepared to a little question and answer session via Skype, after long considering the embarrassment potential I agreed, My broad Lancashire accent was only something I noticed, my nervous disposition and my twitchy lips wouldn’t be so apparent over the short time it took to answer the questions, surely.
So I did the little interview on Skype and I felt it went okay, I wasn’t going to look like a shy country boy with an accent broader than a jumbo jet’s wing span. In March 2013 N.H.K screened the clip of me and the turtle on their show, they sent me a D.V.D copy of the show, here it is, my 5 minutes of fame, I made it, I’m big in Japan. The format of Taloula Dog consists of screening video clips, during which a box opens on the screen to reveal the person who starred in the clip, for me this was the question and answer session via Skype.
Oh man, I can tell you, I have only watched it once, the broad Lancashire accent, the twitchy lips and shy personality were magnified a hundred times over, In my opinion I looked completely daft. I intended uploading the D.V.D to Youtube, I’m sorry but you are missing a real treat, it would simply be too embarrassing for me to show, I’ve decided being big in Japan is enough. But if anyone wants to talk about copyright sale of one of the best sea turtle and diver encounters, I’m open to offers.
